Screams & Social Justice: Analyzing the Politics of Horror

Horror has long served as a reflection of society’s deepest fears, anxieties, and injustices. This course explores the political, cultural, and social dimensions of the horror genre across film. Students will examine how horror engages with issues such as race, gender and class. Through critical film discussions, we will consider: How does horror expose societal trauma? Works studied will include: Get Out, Night of the Living Dead and Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Students will gain tools for media analysis, cultural critique, and creative expression. At the end of the course, you will share your idea for a horror script that reflects a current social political issue. First Round Course Dates = 10/22/25 - 12/7/25 - This is a 7 week hybrid course (part self-paced with live Zooms). I will provide you with movie suggestions and related readings then we will "gather" in the discussion board and on Zoom to share our thoughts.
